About

This VIP encourages students’ artistic expression and invites them to explore the rich and fascinating world of birds across art, media, and culture while actively contributing to a creative, collaborative, and evolving digital arts and media project. 1. Create and publish a student-driven magazine Students contribute to the production of Plumage: Birds in Arts and Media, developed in both digital and print formats, offering a platform for artistic expression, research, and storytelling. 2. Build and expand a dynamic digital platform Participants help develop and maintain the Plumage website, experimenting with interactive features such as games, maps, and curated databases of scholarly and creative resources. The platform highlights the intersection of art, science, and the humanities, with a focus on contemporary environmental questions. 3. Develop themed issues of Plumage Each issue focuses on a specific theme, examining how birds are represented, imagined, and symbolized across media and historical periods. Past themes include The Swan, Birds of War and Peace, Pigeons, and Myths, Fairy Tales, and Folklore. The project showcases the diverse presence of birds in global artistic and media traditions, encouraging comparative and interdisciplinary thinking. 4. Engage with urgent environmental challenges Through research and creative work, students address critical issues such as biodiversity loss and climate change, fostering awareness and informed reflection. 5. Develop critical, creative, and digital skills Students strengthen their abilities in critical analysis, creative production, and digital media practices, building transferable skills across disciplines. 6. Foster collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange The VIP promotes teamwork among students, faculty, and external contributors, creating a collaborative environment that bridges multiple fields of expertise. This VIP engages students in a range of creative, technical, and critical challenges at the intersection of arts, media, and environmental inquiry: Designing and developing a digital platform: Build, maintain, and expand the project website, including interactive tools (games, maps, databases, curated collections) with attention to visual design and usability. Expanding outreach and visibility: Develop strategies to promote the magazine and increase audience engagement across digital platforms. Producing new issues of Plumage: Explore artistic representations of birds in French and global contexts, while engaging with environmental humanities and themes such as climate change and biodiversity through diverse media (film, literature, performance, music, and visual arts). Developing collaborations across campus and beyond: Work with Arts@Tech and campus partners such as the Birdwatchers Club and Serve-Learn-Sustain initiative.
